New Young Pony Club - Jerk Me: This is an ace punk-funk jam in the spirit of ESG/Bush Tetras/Material, working some wonderfully sleazy guitar licks worthy of a Marc Bolan reference. And although I might think the NYPC is strongly influenced by certain artists from certain eras, they continually surpass those influences to produce very modern songs that are (so far) nothing short of bulletproof.
I wonder if the NYPC will continue to release only 7inch singles, or if they will work towards an album? I kind of hope for the former, preferring the current mysteriously exclusive access to their music through the small vinyl format. But maybe that's just me being selfish...

The Hot Springs - CacoDisco: I first fell in love with song when I found it on a Montreal Pop Sampler earlier this year up at the radio station. It became a staple of my show until the station started getting renovated and I couldn't find that particular pop sampler. Fairly frustrating, but whatever. Recently I was reminded of this song while I was re-logging my old playlists and I decided to check the old WWW for some news on the Hot Springs. They have an album out now and are planning to do lots of shows in the fall. Lucky for you if you live around the Montreal area.

Cut Copy - Radio 1 Mix (45 minutes, mp3): If you've been following this page, or my radio program for the past year and a half you'd know that Cut Copy is probably my favorite thing to play on any occasion. Now they're coming to a North American town near you! This is a mix Cut Copy put together for a bbc radio 1 show while they were touring the UK with Mylo. Chromeo - Needy Girl (Bloc Party remix): If Needy Girl wasn't hot enough, Russell Lissack of the Bloc Party reassembled a nice throwback to New Order's Blue Monday, along with added rythm guitar, synths and a more rock oriented bassline. I kinda wished the guitar riff at the end of the first chorus would have carried on through the song, or a least came back for seconds, but whatever. The big sweeping synths at the end keep things moving and this is certainly a refreshing visit to one of my favorite songs.

Shirokuma - Moonlight In The Afternoon: I don't know what took me (or anyone else for that matter) so long to post this song. Originally released on a 10" back in 2003, this big warm slice of electropop was reissued on a double 10" (weirdest format yet, I think. Still waitin on a split 10" from somebody to take the crown though) earlier this year with remixes by Andy Votel and Max Tundra.
On the back of the record sleeve the song is cleverly spelled out on a pink and white checkerboard. With the japanese woman's alphabet interpolation "A...B...C...D..." spelled out on the Pink squares next to Mark Corrin's corresponding verses on the white squares. You'll notice that for each letter, the verse that follows corresponds alphabetically "A - city Arches in the sun as we hurry past," "E - Eating heat in the pink of a hotel bed," "L- Laserprints on our skin at the waterfall," and this goes on through the whole alphabet. This sleeve is almost as fun to look at as this song is to listen to. Definately one of the most cleverly designed sleeves I have ever seen. Not to mention the quality of the vinyl pressing itself. It sounds really good. In fact, I'm finding that all the vinyl I get on 10" sounds better than anything else. I really should find out where these are all getting pressed. I'd post a picture of this one to illustrate the clever graphic design, but I don't have a digital camera or scanner. I'll try and borrow one later.

Your results are back from the lab.

Duchess Says - In Serial: This might be the best song I have posted yet (yeah I know, nevermind that Cribs thing, good song, but I was crazy to say "best song ever"). With In Serial I'm thinking Manga Studios circa 1985 teaming up with Italo-electro-disco pioneer and sountrack genius Giorgio Moroder to produce an Anime feature obsessed with the juxtaposition of contrast and homogenization, and it would have been called Black Moonbird. There'd be tons of crazy dangerous half-machine villians (with forward facing utillity style haircuts) trying to take over Tokyo and make everyone half-machine so they can work for the Evil Boss to create this giant robot that will move the moon into a position where it always eclipses the sun over Japan. The tide is always high and the sun no longer rises. Just this faint halo hovering to blot out the contrast between day and night, good and evil, life and work, man and machine.

Of course or hero, Ryudo Hawkwind (neurological scientist by day, motorcycle vigilante gang leader by night), will not accept this fate. And of course his girlfriend, Kagero (tired journalist by day, underground synth-rock diva by night), get's wrapped up in the boss' plans. Naturally, Ryudo has to save her and the world with his gang on their totally kitted out street bikes, sporting their fashionably futuristic sideways haircuts.

At the climax of the movie, just when the giant Black Moon robot is blasting off into space, Ryudo will expose the fact that he is a man-machine and he will sacrifice himself by boarding the robot to stop the Evil Boss' planned blackening of the sun. and just as the giant robot is pushing the moon into position slowly in front of the sun (Duchess Says' In Serial is expertly chosen to score the scene: Kagero crying safely on earth, the war is fighting fiercly in the streets. We see the sunlight dimming over the trees, faces going dark highlighting the terrified watering whites of their eyes, the melancholic synth solo of In Serial [@ the 2:53 mark] driving the point home), the robot explodes into a giant silent fireball, killing Ryudo while making obvious references to the Phoenix as the moon glides safely over the sun to resume it's natural orbit.

Lo-Fi-Fnk - Wake Up: These two swedish kids started their band in high school back in 2001. I was a big fan of last years Unighted single. Now this track is the b-side of their Change Channel 7-inch put out on moshi moshi records, which was incidentally released in England on June 6th, the Swedish National Day. Look out for their upcoming full length, and as well as one track on Kitsune's next upcoming compilation.

Annie - Me Plus One: Finally out in North America care of Vice Recordings. I hope vice issues the same wonderful gatefold sleeve double vinyl that came out on 679 back in january.

Hard-Fi - Better Dub Better: What constitutes "limited edition?" This bright yellow 7-inch is apparently a limited edition, of which I have number 2687. Seriously. So there's at least 3000 of these little yellow records? Sounds exclusive...
Anyway I am a sucker for dubs, and b-sides, especially dub rock on b-sides of limited edition yellow 7's! (am I the little brother of Art Brut?) This track is the Gran Tourismo dub remix of "Better do Better" which is the b-side of the Hard to Beat single, which will be on their recent full length "Stars of CCTV." NIce cover art for this single, "I love you Tina".

Sexual Harassment - If I Gave You A Party: Originally released on Heat records back in 1983, Gomma Records (Munk, Who Made Who, Leeroy Hanghofer, headman, rammelzee...etc) reissued this track on their 2001 Anti-NY compilation. Brilliant track, thanks to Neil Frost at Beatstreet Records for pointing this one out to me, cause I think I am so rad and wouldn't listen to anything that was released more than a year ago. I am working this out.

Fox n'Wolf - Youth Alcoholic: This song totally kills it. I swear these two swedes are going to be the best band to see live. They have apparently recently finished recording their full length and are looking to put it out later this year. Watch out for it!

Manhead - Birth, School, Work, Death: This is an older Manhead track, but his full length album was recently released this past April, and this one happens to be my favorite one. The album seems more like a compilation of dance singles, good dance singles mind you, but not a cohesive album in my opinion. This song is also redone instrumentally as "dancer" which is the b-side of the 12" this is off. But I like this track for the hopeless lyrics by Christian Kreuz.

The heavy electro-funk bassline and the dub style echo on the guitars. This came out as a 12" on Kitsune and also features remixes by Interpol's Carlos D, and Tommy Sunshine.

This song sounds like it's speeding up when you leave the room. I was letting my record run till the end and I went downstairs for more coffee and I thought my turntable was speeding up on it's own. I almost stopped it and had to redo the whole mix. But what does that have to do with Dieter Schmidt?

Fellini - Rock Europeu: The first time I heard this song, at the end of the first sixteen bars I was expecting Ian Curtis to start complaining about how empty somethingorother was, but no, he doesn't. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to hear a brazillian guy singinging in Portuguese about (what sounds like) chicks and partying. I guess Fellini could be bitching about post-industrial lonliness, but I can't understand Portuguese so I'm gonna call chicks and partying on this one.
This track came off a 7" split with As Mercenaries, and will be coming out on a full length compilation of classic Brazillian post-punk called The Sexual Life of The Savages, on Soul Jazz Records. I am looking forward to it.

Gang of Four - Damaged Goods: I went to the Gang of Four concert here in Vancouver on Saturday night expecting an okay show. I knew they'd be the Gang of Four, and they'd be playing some Gang of Four songs, and that would be cool. I didn't think they were going to be awesome or anything, just an adequate account of musical history I missed the first time around cause I was only just born the year Entertainment came out. And instead of my parents taking me to see angry post-punk shows I went to Raffi while these guys were originally touring, fair enough though - children don't really get swaggering Brittish lads decrying consumerism. Anyway, like I was saying, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this lot. But seriously, the Gang of Four were incredible. Jon King had the most British moves I'd ever seen and Andy Gill was all deadpan till he randomly smashed his guitar during some slow song about love. This song, Damaged Goods was originally released as a single in 1978, and then on their debut LP Entertainment! in 1979. And this was what they played for the first encore, finishing the show with I Found That Essence Rare. There are some dates left on the tour, go see them.

Pink Grease - Peaches: So there are these two guys named Norman and Tony. On the surface they pretend not to get along, but they live together so this is merely a facade to entertain guests. Every Friday night Tony's twenty-year-old friends come over to their house, get drunk on the couch and ask Tony when they're going, where they're going, and if he's called a cab yet. Norman ends up joining them cause he doesn't really have a choice- he could go upstairs to noodle around with his guitar, read and go to sleep, but hell this is Friday night in the city! There's girls downstairs and god dammit people are partying in his house. Although Norman knows that these kids are completely disorganized and lack leadership he will join them, and against his better judgement get trapped in his own living room on a Friday night. Around 1:00AM Tony will call two cabs to take everyone out and they will ask "where?" The cabs get tired of waiting so they just leave empty. The kids drinking on the couch eventually become the kids sleeping on the floor. I come home from work at 4:00AM, wake them up briefly and go to bed.
The whole night has been wasted because of a lack of direction and Norman is finally over it. From now on at 10:30PM when all the kids on the couch start asking where they're going and when they're leaving Norman will put this song on, rock out for three minutes and just leave straight-up. This is what will happen every Friday night for the rest of the summer.

The Cribs - You're Gonna Lose Us: After Norman leaves properly, Tony will put this song on with the hope it will inspire the kids on the couch to follow Norman, because although Tony doesn't know it yet, this is his anthem. This song kinda reminds me of old school 2-tone era Specials. Not in the way that it sounds like a ska song, because it doesn't, but in the way it sits next to Friday night, Saturday morning in lyrical quality and content. Both songs are proper self aware abstracts on drinking in England that seem to question the direction of youth, but aren't afraid to be a part of it. Well maybe, I've never been to England, so I apologize if I am out of control here.

With the fantastic plethora of wonderful mp3 blogs posting an unending supply of good new music I don't even know what to post anymore. It's all been done. Like am I going to post the alan braxe remix of heartbeat? I think I'll let the club dj's play that for you first. The Buzzcocks? When in Rome? Weird long electro tracks by Lindstrom? I can't think of anything to post today that would make any sense. So I'll round-up all my latest favorite posts by other bloggers.

The New Black has posted an amazing cover by Vitaminsforyou, of the Arcade Fire's "No Cars Go." I think the new black review is just about right.

The Swish Blog has posted an infectious example of unfinished indie scales called Another Number by The Cribs. The Theme from Chalets is pretty good as well.

Uncritical, always one of my favorites, has posted two great songs in his Wednesday, March 30th post. The Moneybrother song (they're building walls around us) is incredibly poppy and catchy and reminiscent of "crappy late eighties tv shows" (what's wrong with that?). The Boogers track is totally different and totally fun. Thanks for all the great posts Chris!

the SpoiltVictorianChild is consistently posting good fresh music, another regular favorite of mine for sure. About a month ago he posted The New Sound by The Capricorns in this post. I still really can't get enough of these "dracula synths." There's also a post for swedish synth pop girl Compute.

Ultrapost: Ragazzi, MIA, You Say party! We say Die!, the Five O'clock Heroes...

Ragazzi - Weekend: I was introduced to this band thanks to Chris at Uncritical when he posted "Ends" last summer. This song is new-wave synth pop at it's best, played by five guys who resemble Gary Numan. Weekend has priceless post-industrial lyrics coupled with a heart-wrenchingly-refrained-from-fist-pumping melody. In fact the whole album, Friday, seems steeped in dreamy post-industrial frustration and melodic refrain/sustain.. Like the song Ends (click to download), where the chorus succinctly deconstructs working class: "you sleep and wake up, you have your hair cut, you go out voting, yeah that's working, the home I live in, the wife and children, these are the things that can make me feel in love!" over the most intense synthesizer workout you're likely to hear in your life. The album also saw some superstar guests, Erland Oye literally phoned in his parts on The Partner and japanese musician/ex-geisha/photographer/vogue columnist Hanayo appears on Call and reply. The composition of this album was also aided with unbelievable production from Mario Thaler (producer for the Notwist and Lali Puna).

You Say Party! We say Die! - Apocolypse Meow: Nothing beats a post-apocolyptic joycore love song done by an artsy bike gang (I assume they ride bikes) from Abbotsford BC. Nothing except maybe one that's longer than a minute forty-nine seconds. The sincere naievety of the lyrics remind me of the nineties, but in a good way. This song's like Kathleen Hanna doing a cover of a Portishead impersonation. Maybe that's why I like this song so much, that and the rickety synth rythm easily finds a place in my heart.

The Five O'clock Heroes - Head games: Title track from the debut LP of the Five O'Clock Heroes. Reminds me of The Jam, but not too much, not directly. Just enough that I'd play this song next to "In the City" in a DJ set or something. I saw them play in the basement of the Lit in New York about a year and a half ago and it was one of the 3 best shows I saw in 9 days, and I took in at least 20 bands. Yeah, the Five O'clock Heroes are awesome and I think they're touring the UK right now. In fact they are, Here's the dates:

It's obvious that's how MIA would behave when confronted by Ex-Onion intern, Aziz Ansari (they have a lot in common) outside the knitting factory. Seriously, this is funny.

Bang Bang - Shoot the Model (teen remix): 11 months ago I heard Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's song Rubicon and I declared! it would be the number one summer jam of 2004. I live in Vancouver so Rubicon never really blew up the spot, unless the spot happened to be my living room. I know rubicon took off in other cities, and for all the right reasons - Campy disco beat and an awesome solo played on a cheap guitar. This version of Shoot the Model has all the elements for being the number one summer jam of 2005 (except it was released as a single 12 months ago in Europe, but whatever North America's supposed to be late). We have the standard new rock/house beat, real bass, and a hotter-than-sunburn guitar riff for a chorus. This guitar is the most amazing thing I have heard all year. Much like the Alan Braxe and Fred Falke track in question earlier, the chorus guitar sounds like one of those starter kit electric guitars with the speaker built into the body, like the one in Bart Simpson's closet. And somehow this cheap-ass guitar tone makes me want to strike the most intense hi-top crushing air-guitar pose and rock an extreme overbite. How can French people get away with this?

That said, Autobahn Music Box was immediately my favorite song from their debut full length Bright Like Neon Love.

Cut Copy - Bright Neon Payphone: Another one from the end of the album. I can't pin down who Dan Whitfords vocals on this track remind me of. I wish I could because then I could have something relevant and witty to say...nope.

Hot Chip - No More Master: Hot Chip's debut album "Coming On Strong" was really fantastic. It blew me away to be honest. It was this campy/sincere bedroom electrofunk album unsure of it's place in the world, and you know Alexis Taylor sang all those lyrics in front of a full length mirror. Now we have the new Hot Chip and it's shit hot. The boys have grown up some, stepped away from the mirror assuming control of the listener and given us an intelligently ridiculous and wonderful song. I wonder if this is an indication of their next full length.

Fannypack - You Gotta Know: Here's the thing. About a year ago this guy gave me Grandia for the playstation one and told me I had to finish it. It is hands down the most annoying video game ever created. Non stop repetition of you killing birds, snakes and scorpions in the desert for 100 hours just so you can get strong enough to beat this lame boss. It's insane. I brought my playstation out of the closet to finish this game, lost two weeks of my life, put the playsyation back in the box and refiled it back in the closet. Now about a month or so ago I bought an RPG for my computer called Neverwinter Nights because I thought it would keep me inside, installed it and played it for a couple of days, went out and got drunk then forgot about it. I'm not really into video games, though sometimes I think I can be. This week my internet went down cause the modem broke or something so I couldn't post to this page or do any web related work. I decide to play Neverwinter Nights and it ruins my whole week. I lost my identity in the real world and had a hard time going outside. I listened to this record over and over without even realizing it while I battled this stupid video game and anytime I peeled myself away from it, this "you've got to know" hook was in my head. Yesterday night the internet works again so I put on this Kitsune X record minus the RPG thank god, and beheld the magic that is fannypack.

The T.A.L.A. Band Disband

T.A.L.A. Band - mystery track: So another Vancouver band (see Fuck Me USA)records an EP and breaks up before it sees the light of day. I wonder why this happens. I wonder why it only happens to my favorite bands in the city. Do I have a taste for tension? No, I just like post-punk/art-dance-rock/new-wave bands- you know how it is. With the T.A.L.A. Band we have the post punk/funk rythms, post punk guitar, and vocals like Mark E. Smith covering Ian Curtis doing an exaggerated impersonation of Robert Smith, but still original- sounding nothing like the above mentioned artists. It was all so perfect in 2004, complete with promises of seven minute sets at artsy fartsy skate shops. These kids were getting my vote as the best band in Vancouver. Then a week ago I got this CD with news the members of the T.A.L.A. Band had moved on to other projects. Let's hope they can start 4 bands as awesome as this.

No way man, Paul McCartney just doesn't DO italo-electro disco.

Paul McCartney - Temporary Secretary: Well actually, Paul McCartney does do italo electro. This is actually an official Paul McCartney release, released by Parlophone first in 1980 as a twelve inch b/w Secret Friend limited to 25,000 pressings, and again by Parlophone in 2003 as the Radio Slave edit, a single sided twelve inch limited to 500 copies worldwide. Now I recorded this version off the single sided 2003 release, but it's pretty much the same as the original track. From what I can gather, the Radio Slave edit has some extra hi-hat accents, some reverse snares, the arpeggiated synth intro has been extended, as has the entire track, by about 2 minutes. But that's it. Paul McCartney was actually behind this song and he actually released it in 1980. Many thanks to DJ Beef who played this song on his radio show a couple of weeks ago. That's where I heard it for the first time.

Charlie - Spacer Woman: Now if you are wondering just what Italo-Electro Disco is, this is one of the finest examples. I can't believe people were dancing to this in 1982, cause it's really fantastic electro with really fantastic lyrics: "I'm a spacer woman, don't you want to love me/ I don't want to hurt you, I just want to love you." This song was recorded off the vinyl version of I Robots compilation of early italo electro disco.

Ego Wrappin - Track Scorcher: This song is so much fun I can't even believe it. It's like they are at the international departures gate and they are going somewhere fresh. And since it's in Japanese, Ego Wrappin could be singing about dead birds for all I know, but I doubt it cause dead birds aren't this much fun. By the way, the track gets scorched at the 1:20 mark by an amazing wall of reverbed guitars.

Yukari Rotten - Break: I was so worried I would never get this record by the way Picadilly Records was talking about it, but I totally fluked out and found it on Jet Set Records. Now I have it and so do you. Yukari Rotten is Yukari Fresh, although I don't know what the distinction is between the two monikers. This song is the first single off her newest album called Me, this 12" also features remixes by Headman and Chicks On Speed.

None at all. Unlike the NYPC's "Ice Cream" that's melting in your Vice dream. Oh shit, I don't read Vice, I mean it's not cool to read vice. Seriously, I don't even know who Terry Richardson is. Uhhh, Throbbing Gristle is so rad.

Well I've done it again, I was going to post a heads up that there was going to be a Lady Sovereign secret show, but I am 2 hours and 16 minutes too late for that. I lost track of the days. Anyway, at 8pm today She was scheduled to play at the Phonica Record Shop, at 51 Poland Street, Soho, London W1. It was free. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada so I am lazy and have no concept of world time.

I've been joking around for a while about crunk vs. grime, but seriously, are the crunk guys gonna pack up their D & G luggage and head over to england to battle the grime scene? Only time will tell...

Fox n'Wolf!

Fox n'Wolf - Rules Out

What if Rob Halford got together with Terri Nunn of Berlin? What if they Just had Synth Guitars and drum machines and clever wit? They'd still be outclassed by Swedish duo Fox n'Wolf. Youth Alcoholic was my number one pick for best single of 2004, Rules Out is the B side of that single, and it is completely over the top. Fox n'Wolf sent me a poster with this record, and the poster looks like this song sounds, if that makes any sense. I need a digital camera to photograph this poster, because it is the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

Fox n'Wolf are also in the middle of recording new songs to put out on a new album, but they want to release it on a foreign label. If you are a foreign label boss you should definately get ahold of these kids.

Moving Units

"Live from Pompei! It's the Moving Units!" At least that's what it seemed like as they rounded off their set last night at Richards on Richards, here in Vancouver. Their performance caught me completely off guard, I saw them about two months ago here and it was a pretty cut and dry rock show - a solid set of three and a half minute numbers, the kids were dancing, band finishes, drinks beer.

Not so last night. To begin with, their lighting was perfect, just a couple of flourescent tubes on the floor made the band look like they were jamming at the Korova Milk Bar. The songs were longer and although the rythym section kept me moving along, near the end of the show their performance spun into a psychadelic meltdown and they played a fifteen minute version of "Emancipation". Okay, maybe ten minute. Whatever, the Moving Units performance was rad and the "secret machines" were completely out of place headlining this show, let alone being on the same bill.

Moving Units - X and Y: This is how the show should have continued after the psychadelics. Seriously, everyone was so bummed the performance was over. This is an older release I recorded off the bubble gum pink vinyl "12 inches EP".

MIA Album delayed for North America!

MIA - 10 Dollar

The album, Arular was supposed to come out here on February 22, but do to sampling issues the album's North American release has been delayed indefinately.

Oh well, till it comes out I will post a single from the album I recorded off an MIA white label last week, and put into a mix I posted the other day, this is the B side, and apparently, according to my roommate this song was featured on CSI this monday. Can anyone confirm that?

Sex In Dallas- Everybody Deserves to be Fucked (original): The beat is driving relentlessly through any dance floor it gets dropped onto, the synth and guitar noise is incredible and the narrative is fucking brilliant.What more can I say? It's fashionable? Probably. I heard Colette was down with these cats. This 12" also includes a remix by the hacker, french fragz, and the tomcats in tokyo.

The Go! Team- Hold Yr Terror Close: And now for something completely different... try this beautiful ragtime type pop song on for size. This comes off their wonderful 12" they put out for The Power Is On single and seems unlike the rest of what I've heard from The Go! Team, (which are thundering marching band driven anthems of punk/dance) and is not available on the full length LP. And for added indie charm it sounds like Thomas Edison recorded it and I recorded it directly off WFMU, but I didn't. This is the real deal people.

Buy it! and I also reccomend the full length Thunder Lightening Strike (incidentally so do a lot of other noteworthy folks) from the Memphis Industries site.

M.I.A. - Galang: I don't know much about this artist other than M.I.A. are totally awesome and they're on XL Recordings. The beat is rad- full of electro bass squelches and all sorts or random synth noise. The video is something fantastic too. These have to be the best collection outfits any one pop singer has worn in one video ever. It was directed by Ruben Fleischer who has also done videos for Wiley, Ellen Alien, Electric Six and Dizzee Rascal among others.

Rozzetta- Fantasy: This video was made by a Swedish girl named Jenny Mortsell as part of her Graphics design masters degree. She cranked out an awesome piece of Italian Disco with the help of producer Karel Post and a hairdresser named Lilli. I know the inclusion of the hairdressor seems unnessecary here, but I just don't believe people can make this kind of music without the right hairdo. Okay. Watch the video, you'll see what I mean.

Cosmo Vitelli- Dance With Me: Unlike yesterday's post of Hot Chip's Shining Escalade, this song would feel totally unnessecary inside on a rainy afternoon. In fact it would feel unnessecary most of the time and only under the right circumstances would this track go off well. But let's say you are at a super fun dance party where nobody takes themselves too seriously, and everybody has a penchant for straight up disco, cause that's what this is- straight disco, complete with corny lyrics that only Europeans could think of, this might get your feet moving and your arms pumping. This comes from a split 10" record with The Whitest Boy Alive. And the production is fantastic by the way.

Ratatat- Cherry: Let's pretend your dance party went well and you and your new sweetheart are heading back to your place to make-out. You totally need some make-out music and Barry White just doesn't suit you, Marvin Gaye is too obvious, and, well, none of that classic make-out music will cut it anymore cause you are a new generation and you need your own make-out soundtrack. Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting you shelve your Tears for Fears records or anything. I just have to agree with Pitchfork and say that this is one of the hottest make-out songs ever.

I have returned again from an extended absence around here. I was just way too busy in the past week to do any posts. I had to find a house to rent, which is nearly impossible in vancouver, and make sure the people I care about are enjoying their summer. Growing moustaches and waterskiing takes a lot out of a guy.

Seelenluft- Manila (Zongamin Remix): I'm pretty sure fluxblog posted the Ewan Pearson mix of this track a while ago, but the zongamin version is where it's at. Like the rest of the Zongamin mix canon, it's got a heavy disco-funk bump, and that odd zongamin synthesizer noise. Like a synth-harpsichord or something. I'm no keyboard encyclopedia so I can't tell you if it's a moog or korg or whatever, but that sound shows up in most of zongamin's songs. This is taken from Seelenluft's Manila Mixes twelve inch. This record includes mixes by Manitoba, Ewan Pearson, the original radio version, and this Zongamin remix.

Hot Chip- Shining Escalade: Taken from the Hot Chip's full length vinyl "Coming On Strong." This track is a nice mellow electro-pop piece that works nice at the end of a night of excess, or for staying inside to do some ironing on a rainy afternoon. This record seems to be reserved in lush, yet minimal lo-fi electro-pop, with lyrics reserved mostly in tongue in cheek sincerity. A bit of an oxymoron no doubt, but I believe that Alexis Taylor is sincere about shiny S.U.V.'s one way or another.

Protex- Don't Ring Me Up: This track is just total fun and it fucking rules. How often do you hear a song that's this fun? Once a month I reckon. Protex were formed in 1978 by vocalist/guitarists David McMaster and Aidan Murtagh bassist Paul Maxwell and drummer Owen Mcfadden. They were immediately picked up by Polydor and released three singles "I can't Cope", "I can only dream" and "A place in your heart." Polygram got fed up with new wave bullshit and dropped Protex in 1981. This track was originally released on the Northern Ireland Label "Good Vibrations" as a 7 inch in 1979 and was re-released on the "Good Vibrations" punk singles compilation on Anagram Records.

Captain Comatose- Complete Gold: This track is taken from the Captain Comatose record "Going Out," an outstanding full length of electro new wave disco that I wish was two hours longer. This song reminds me of the Depeche Mode track "Useless" for some reason, even though they are not of similar tempo. I think i'm just going to write a poem for this review/preview.

Now, to recite this poem effectively we will need to establish tone. Think black and white art films, you have to assume a heavy european accent, maybe german, and sound very artistic and important with cigarette waving importantly and with a sense of immediacy in your hand:

Stereo Total- Nationale 7: Black turtlenecks: This is what North America is lacking right now. It's amazing that these Germans can wear them so proudly and with such conviction while singing rudimentary french pop songs. I love it, really I can't get enough of believing that these Germans wear these black turtlenecks while our Canadian radio (cbc radio 2) hints at this possibility through abstract ambient noise and british art synth pop. This is the dream, are you with me ladies?

Stereo Total- C'est la Mort: Honestly, this is it. Really, can you get these cheesy french pop hooks out of your head now? Even if they are coming straight from Berlin? I didn't think so. I've been singing about sandwiches and death and life for the past couple of weeks and I haven't even got around to my own black turtleneck yet. You need this, even if it's four years old.

Chromeo- You're So Gangsta: So you're chillin in Paris or Antibes or Poland and you got this dope fresh Peugot- you definately need new driving music. Here you go. And, Chromeo is gonna play a show near you sometime soon. And allright, they may or may not play this one at your show, but they will if you harass the hell out of those boys. Seriously, this is the excuse for mad air-punching, crazy bad dance moves, and more air punching. What more could you ask for? Check the show out and rock out!

Amd that's saying a lot since I must have heard over 100,000 songs in my life and been to every gig I had the day off to see since I was twelve. And listen you Euros, Chromeo like to have crowd participation during this one. They do it once for real, full drums and all, and then once "acoustic" (and by acoustic I mean flying V guitars and synthesizers only) for you all to sing along with them. The Unicorns- Thunder and Lightening: You may remember the Unicorns from their widely received "debut" Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? out on Montreal's Alien8 records, but their actual LP debut was in January of 2003 with Unicorns Are People Too. And the Unicorns aren't from Montreal either. Originally from Campbell River, B.C. (small town on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada) Nick relocated to Montreal to go to film school in 1999. Eventually Alden followed, opting out of the sleepy music scene on Vancouver Island in favour of Montreal's active music community. This track was however recorded at the House of Common in Campbell River between December 24th to 27th of 2001.

The Unicorns- 52 Favorite Things: Now this is Lo-Fi!!! Sears brand guitars, casio sk-1's, "real" drums, yeah! This song is what my birthday should have been like. A nice summer afternoon on the side of some lake on Vancouver Island. Throwing rocks in the water and blaming things on my sister. Ahh, but such is not the case with life in the big city, with all us frienster hipsters with our cool belts and ironic t-shirts, always trying to keep ahead of everyone else. We have no time to relax- to lay on the rocks on the shore, with nothing more to worry about than how much wood will have to be chopped.

Heavy metal rules!!!

Yeah, heavy metal parking lot pretty much rules too.

So, it's my 25th birthday today and I thought I'd divert from the more dance oriented posts I've been doing, in favor of some birthday music.

Motorhead- Motorhead: This is it. If you have a fucking amazing stereo turn it all the way up, way past 11 and fucking rock out. I'm serious. It's the band's name, the song title, and the message. And it's one of my favorite songs of all time, cause this song rocks harder than any song ever.

Hanson Brothers- Brad: From Vancouver Island, Victoria, B.C. it's the Hanson Brothers, and this is the brand new single just released 15 years ago. Based on the Nomeansno song Dad this song is the Canadian childhood, for real this time. And I wasted about a half a year when I was thirteen years old harassing this record store in Nanaimo to get this 7 inch in. Finally I got it, and twelve years later I recorded it onto my computer to share with you on my birthday cause it makes me all nostalgic.

This week was terrible, well terribly AWESOME, but not for posting on this here blog spot. I followed Chromeo around western North America and danced my ass off. And I had to cover Nardwuar's radio show, and do my own program, and go to work. Anyway, some new fun tracks now.

Seelenluft- You Come Along: Taken from seelenluft's "You Come Along" twelve inch. This record has some very nice mixes on it. The original, which I've posted here is the most bouncy electro of them all, but also features mixes by Joakim, Munk, and M.A.N.D.Y. This record came from Klein records in austria, and I must say that their shipping time and price is the best I've come across from any record label or distributer. It took four days to receive this record, and I bought another twelve inch as well, and together they cost me about $28.00 canadian, with shipping and exchange. Not bad.

Cut Copy- Going Nowhere: I think fluxblog posted another cut copy track a while ago, and Kudos for that. Cut Copy is the fucking best. This track is just straight ultra-catchy power pop, with a little disco thrown in for good measure. If I ever had a video segment this would be the soundtrack. Dan Whitford (aka cut copy) is a genius and if his record, Bright Like Neon Love makes it out of Australia this year it should give the forthcoming LCD Soundsystem full length a run for it's money, provided North Americans deserve as much credit as I give them. Not like the music is the same though- James Murphy's LCD Soundsystem is sarcastic and aims for your indie brain, while Cut Copy is just fun and target's your heart, but I'm sure you'll find the styles complimentary.

Lopazz- Wusduwillst: Since Trevor Jackson (Output Recordings boss, mastermind behind Playgroup) recently forced Lopazz to shoot footage for the "I Need Ya" video at knife-point in New York, saying he just needed to "Make it happen," and "I need Ya" is due out on upcomming Colette No. 6 compilation, I figured it'd be good to post a different track. Just try to figure out what Stefan Eichinger is slurring in this piece- even if you're German. Something about living as far as I can tell. Anyway, I like this number, and I'd like to extend my thanks to Chris at Uncritical for mentioning my blog. And I can't remember who originally posted Lopazz' "I need Ya" a while back. I thought it was uncritical, maybe fluxblog, but I am lost. Anyway, thanks to whoever you are for getting me into this Lopazz stuff. I ordered the 12" from output records immediately after reading the original Lopazz blog.

Emperor X- Extrerminata Beat: Chad Matheny, also known as Emperor X was given a brand new Casio SK-1 for Christmas at the tender age of eight. And like you, I am also surprised the recipient of such technology would go on to lord over a dangerous yet lucrative indie lo-fi scene. Exterminata Beat is the opening track from his album of sample-heavy synth-pop "Tectonic Membrane/Thin Strip on an Edgeless Platform" (released June 8, 2004, Snowglobe), and it starts things off just right. It's fun, accessible, poppy, Chad's vocals sound like a subdued Isaac Brock, and the instruments sound almost toyish. That's the idea though right, instruments bought on indie cred, hopelessly tuneless, yet ernest vocals and the master recordings made on tascam four-tracks dad found in a pawn shop. Well it works for me anyway.

I Am the World Trade Center- Future Sightings: Athens Georgia, home to the 40 Watt, the Black Lips (banned from the 40 watt), and Of Montreal is also home to I am The World Trade Center. This track was taken from 2004's "The Cover Up" LP, available on both CD, and limited edition white vinyl. Once you can get past the opening bar of synth hits reminiscent of a mid-nineties car commercial trying to emulate "freedom" or "escape" this turns out to be a great song. The chorus sounds just like the Cansecos track "This Small Disaster" (which I would like to post when Shaw fixes my server accounts) the arrangements are tight and the production is good.

In related news... Amy Dykes, the vocalist for I am The Workd Trade Center was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system click here for more info) on april 27 of this year. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is on blood thinner, yet she still goes out to DJ the IATWTC party on Wednesday Nights at the Go bar in Athens. My best friend got cancer last year and spent 120 days in the hospital. The hospital is boring, painful, it smells funny and you usually end up with tubes and needles all day. Not to mention how uncomfortable chemotherapy is. My friend used to say he could taste the chemicals when he was getting the chemotherapy injections. Amy is probably spending most of her week in the hospital and would likely appreciate any sort of diversion from hospital life. So if you would like, you can send correspondence to:

Nouvelle Vague feat. Camille- Too Drunk To Fuck (dead kennedy's cover): I got this Nouvelle Vague cd Friday morning from some fashion boutique in Paris, apparently a month before it is scheduled to be released, and the jury is still out on this track. You see, if I hadn't grown up listening to the Dead Kennedys I would probably find this piece to be very interesting, like some amazing art piece done by an amazingly artsy French girl who I would be all falling in love with. But, such is not the case. I can't decide whether I am angry or sad or just lost on this song. I mean seriously, the Dead Kennedy's weren't meant to be contemporary easy listening. But at the same time, this might help to be an educational song for people who were too young, too old, or too not punk enough to remember the Dead Kennedy's. You see my problem here? The rest of the album sees seven other bossa nova ladies covering XTC, the Clash, Modern English, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, the Cure, etc. The XTC track, making plans for nigel is easily the best track on the album, with it's melody best suited out of them all for the Nouvelle Vague band to transpose into light bossa nova.

The Undertones- Teenage Kicks: This track is also covered on the Nouvelle Vague album, but c'mon. I gotta post some original power pop. The Undertones formed in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1975, and in 1977 they wrote and recorded this song. It is one of my favorite tracks right now, and it doesn't seem like I have much of a choice. People repeatedly request this on my radio show, it shows up at my door covered by a french bossa nova group, and it's catchy as all hell. Needless to say I'm not complaining.

I've finally returned to this blog thing. I wonder if there's anyone still reading this page? Had too much going on lately. Art openings, shitty standing room only parties, metal shows, glen branca, excessive problematic drinking, and my my radio program moved to friday afternoons on CiTR 101.9fm in Vancouver, which I am happy about because it is the best timeslot I could ever imagine getting. You can also listen on the web at http://www.citr.ca, my program is on from 2-3:30pm, Narduar follows my show, and Avi's "these are the breaks" precedes my show. Alltogether a nice friday afternoon lineup.

So, about the music posting...

"radio 4"- dance to the underground (DFA remix): I think it's fairly safe to say that the original version of this song is completely played out, but this remix by the notorious DFA is so fucking amazing. Definately a hot summer jam. It's virtually unrecognizable as a remix of the Radio 4 song, I think the only lingering sample is of the bass line. From the glitchy electro pulse that starts the track off to the four on the floor house beat, no vocals- this song sounds almost nothing like the guitar heavy dance punk original. And then there's the breakdown in the middle that erupts into a rocksteady frenzy of strings, beats, saxophone, and finally James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem, splits DFA label control with Tim Goldsworthy) belting out a falsetto melody. Which is awesome cause I like falsettos, and I haven't heard the saxophone in a context I liked since the late eighties. This is only available on vinyl and features other remixes by Playgroup, and the Faint. This record should be available in most good indie record shops. (zulu in vancouver, other music in new york).

And now for something old and rad...

The Payolas- China Boys: Do you remember the payolas? Were you at least 6 years old in 1985, and living in canada? Do you remember the "Eyes of a stranger"? Well the same band responsible for that poopy pop that everyone in canada over the age of 23 knows off by heart was responsible for some really good poppy punk new wave stuff. Like this here track. I found a dollar on the floor the other day, went to red cat records on main street, and traded my dollar for the payolas record "in a place like this." I've been passively looking for this record for about 13 years now and finally I got it for a dollar that I found. And this recording was made off that record I found. I would recommend that you go out and scour the record bins around town to see if you can dig up this record as well.

Tomorrow: the undertones, dead kennedy's bossa nova cover review (the jury is way out on this one and needs help), who knows what else.

So my fucked band bulletsnake played the marine club last night, got a flat of PBR's and instead of practicing, me and tyler (yes, we are both tyler) got drunk and made up a new set of dance music yesterday afternoon, accidentally diverting from our traditional emo-folk-glam-metal roots. Anyway, I had to DJ the night too (as much as I wanted someone else to) and these were the hot shit jams of the night (aside from the obviously awesome 5 hour old bulletsnake dance party songs, and the Alan Braxe and Fred Falke track I posted a couple of days ago):

Chromeo- Needy Girl: Well the fact that I had to work the music didn't stop me from getting onto the dancefloor and dancing like John Belushi. You just can't help yourself with a song like this. Taken from 2004's "She's In Control" it's probably the most immediately accessible track on the record. But if you got an ear for this sort of Cameo/Prince/Rammalzee Vs K.Rob sort of thing than the rest of the album is the hottest thing next to Zinc blockin your sunburn. According to chromeo's own bio: "Crossing the Gaza Strip of Sexxx Jams Chromeo is Pee Thug and Dave 1: best friends since their Montreal adolescence, virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture."

Avenue D- 2d2f: Ya, if the bassline isn't enough to kill you, the chorus from these NYC girls that drops in full soulful style "don't get too drunk to fuck, you've got to get it up, don't get too drunk to fuck, you've got to get it in" ought to be enough to straighten the party out.

Fuck Me USA: Infinite Slope- Now I know it's a cliche term, but I don't know what else to call this than one of the best examples of "disco-punk" I've ever heard. With it's super hot disco bass line it's like Saturday night fever vs. Mars, but so much hotter. Although the vocals in this mix are a bit more quiet than they should be this track definitely rocks the party. Unfortunately FMUSA ceased to exist as of December of 2003, right about the time I stumbled across their page on New Music Canada. And despite what that page leads you to believe, FMUSA are not a bunch of suckers with no intestinal fortitude who split because somebody wrote some bullshit rapture comparison on the wall at pat's pub. There were far more practical reasons for the split, like guitarist Jay Watts' move to Montreal to lend his ground level support to the Bloc Quebecois, drummer Brad McKinnon's move to Radio Berlin, vocal assassin Kayla Guthrie is busy, and bassist Dan Colussi, like so many bass players before him was forgotten, and left to pick up the pieces alone...

Fuck Me USA: Tan Thigh- According to FMUSA's guitar shreddin synth stabber Jay Watts, they have recorded a full length of material which is "really well-recorded, 40,000 times better than the mp3s off of our website." Maybe if everyone could all lend their support to this issue, Mr. watts will post the songs, or come up with some brilliant scheme to have the album released, and hopefullly before Soul Jazz sarcastically releases it twenty years from now.

Gold Kicks- Stop by to visit Jay Watts, and read his nice blog, and convince him to release the music.

Alan Braxe & Fred Falke- Rubicon So you're having this totally awesome party, only it's not totally awesome cause nobodies dancing. Everybodies there though- the white belt kids, the broke artists, the b-movie actors, the skateboarding industry, the party kids, the valley girls, the thirty somethings, "photographers", the sexy hairdressers--and the whole thing is fucked because somebody was playing downtempo, or sexy house or something that nobody wants to dance to. This track by France's Alan Braxe & Fred Falke ought to sort everything out. Everybody will be dancing, especially when the shit-hot guitar solo blows up glam rock and disco all at once. Originally released as a single on Virgin/Vulture in March 2004 (that can't be right) I recorded this from Erland Oye's DJ kicks record, although it is also available on CD, the record comes with the songs not mixed together. Both CD and Vinyl versions should be available in your local indie music variety store. (zulu records in vancouver has some copies)

Man With Guitar by Man With Guitar Okay now that the party is in "totally awesome!" mode you can drop this track. It is amazing in the "I refuse to take myself seriously" kind of way. One giant build, the beat drops momentarily, checks itself out, confirms that it is "so hot right now" and then moves along. I got this record in the mail this morning from Forced Exposure. Little (or nothing in my case) is known about this man with guitar, except that it comes from the french Kitsune Midnight Compilation.

Their faces won't grace the cover of Elle, but it's the the words in their songs that are-- sexy as hell, oh come on.

Vancouver's Young and Sexy played a show at richards on richards two nights ago and I was late and I missed them. I suck. I hear they were fantastic and I think everyone should like them. so I will post two of their songs here today.

"Young and Sexy- Ella" This was the first song I heard by them, it is a brutally catchy, lush and mellow acoustic piece that immediately fell into rotation on my radio program.

"Young and Sexy- Young & Sexy" Brilliantly composed minimal orchestral indie pop. This song gets stuck in my head on wednesday evenings when I play soccer. I don't know why, but I don't mind either.

These recordings were taken from their "Life Through One Speaker" album, I recorded them from the vinyl onto my computer. You can even hear the tone arm lifting from the record at the end of "young and sexy." The sound quality here is a bit dodgy, but the original recording is great.

Mahjongg- Jamdek, you'll like it. It's got bleeps and beats and guitars and inaudible vocals and is danceable as hell and has fun written all over it. And although I wasn't going to post any more mahjongg stuff for a while, I was in a jam today so this seemed like the best idea. And they are so hot right now anyway, you'll thank me for it later I'm sure

In fact, since the old mahjongg link doesn't work I'll post it again where it will work "Mahjongg- Aluminum" And this song effing rules by the way. Classic punk style drums, minimalistic guitar assault, early 80's style electro breakdown in the middle, and hovering Julian Casablanca (strokes) style vocals. Just try to sit still while these chicago kids welcome you to "Chi-biza."

You know what the 80's weren't? Electroclash. Just thought I'd put that out there.

Now ESG were this group of four enterprising sisters from the bronx who started a post punk/funk band with a knack for amazing bass lines, pop hooks, perfectly executed drums and autistic lyrics. The bulk of their output was released from 1980-1983, and is best represented by the compilation "a south bronx story" out on soul jazz records, or if you can find an original "come away with ESG" released on the now defunkt "99 records" (sunk by a lawsuit brought about by 99 records artist "liquid liquid" against grandmaster flash) This track, "party music" by ESG, was recorded in 1988, rather late in the game (although they recorded another full length in 2002), and is currently out on a split 12" (more GDM vol. 5) with freddie mas on tigersushi records. I may post freddie's track later on if anybody wants it.

Also, chromeo, a group from montreal released an album earlier this year called "she'z in control" (out on tiga's "turbo records" in canada, and on Vice records in the states) and it is one of the best things I've heard all year. Here is the title track She'z In Control. If anything, of all the retro 80's theme mining bands have done in recent years, this hits the honest nail on the head. And it's a fun song to boot.
